Understanding Your Brain’s Electrical Activity
🔍 What is an EEG?
An Electroencephalogram (EEG) is a simple, safe, and non-invasive test that records the electrical activity of the brain. It helps doctors understand how your brain is functioning and is especially useful for diagnosing conditions like epilepsy, seizures, and other brain disorders.
🧪 Why is EEG Done?
Your doctor may recommend an EEG if you have:
- Seizures or suspected epilepsy
- Episodes of fainting or blackouts
- Unexplained confusion or memory loss
- Head injuries or brain infections
- Sleep disorders (like narcolepsy)
- Monitoring during coma or brain surgery
⚙️ How is the Test Performed?
- You will lie comfortably on a bed or chair.
- Small, flat metal discs called electrodes will be placed on your scalp with a special paste.
- These electrodes record your brain’s electrical signals.
- You may be asked to breathe deeply or look at flashing lights during the test to stimulate brain activity.
- The test usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.
Note: The EEG is painless and does not involve any electricity or radiation.
📝 Preparation Before EEG:
- Wash your hair the night before the test. Do not apply oil, gel, or spray.
- Continue your regular medications unless advised otherwise.
- Eat as usual – don’t skip meals.
- Avoid caffeine (tea/coffee) for at least 6–8 hours before the test.
- If sleep-deprived EEG is planned, your doctor may ask you to stay awake the night before.
❗ Is EEG Safe?
Yes! EEG is completely safe and risk-free, including for children and elderly patients. It does not involve any injections or radiation.
